The winter of 1673 was bitterly cold in Paray-le-Monial, but inside the convent chapel, a spiritual fire was about to be ignited. It was December 27, the feast of St. John the Evangelist. The timing of this encounter was deeply symbolic and no coincidence. The French Church was heavily influenced by a theological movement called Jansenism. Jansenism painted a picture of a harsh, demanding God. It emphasized human depravity, strict moral rigorism, and the belief that only a select few were predestined for salvation. It taught people to approach God with fear and trembling. Into this atmosphere of spiritual chill, the Sacred Heart devotion emerged as a necessary theological antidote.St.
Margaret was kneeling in adoration before the exposed Eucharist. She later described herself as being entirely yielded to the power of His love, having surrendered her own will completely. Suddenly, the physical reality of the chapel faded, and she was enveloped in the presence of Jesus Christ. He did not appear as the distant, terrifying judge that the Jansenists preached, but as an intimate, approachable Saviour.
Replicating the grace given to St. John, Jesus drew St. Margaret to Himself and allowed her to rest her head upon His divine chest. In her autobiography, she struggles to find human words to describe the reality of that moment. She felt the warmth of His heart; she understood His boundless love for humanity. Christ opened to her the "wonders of His love and the inexplicable secrets of His Sacred Heart." Jesus told her that His heart was so full of love for humanity that it could no longer contain the flames of its charity.
He said, “My Divine Heart is so passionately in love with men that it can no longer contain within itself the flames of its ardent charity. It must pour them out by thy means, and manifest itself to them to enrich them with its precious treasures, which contain all the graces of which they have needed to be saved from perdition.” ‘I have chosen thee as an abyss of unworthiness and ignorance to accomplish so great a design, so that all may be done by Me.’”This vision was not simply a private grace meant for her own comfort; it was a mandate. Jesus needed a conduit to pour this love into the world, to pull humanity back from the brink of spiritual ruin and the coldness of contemporary theology. He chose her—an obscure, physically frail nun in a small French town—to be the apostle of this revelation. The message was clear: God is not a distant tyrant, but a lover seeking the affection of His creation.
